What changes
Four tax moments, before and after planning.
Pick a moment to see what usually happens, and what happens when planning starts before December.
The filing becomes the last step of the year, not the first conversation.
The question owners ask first
What is the difference between tax planning and tax preparation?
Tax preparation records what already happened: it turns last year's books into a return and files it on time. Tax planning happens before December 31, while you can still change the result: entity choice, owner salary, the timing of income and purchases, estimated payments and credits. We do both, and planning comes first.
| Topic | Tax planning | Tax preparation |
|---|---|---|
| When | Before December 31, mostly Q3 and Q4 | After the year ends, by the filing deadline |
| Looks at | This year, while it is still open | Last year, after it is closed |
| Can it lower the bill? | Yes. Choices are still open | Rarely. Most choices are already made |
| Covers | Entity, owner salary, timing, estimates, credits | Forms, schedules, elections, e-file |
| You get | A projection and a list of moves to make | A filed return and a payment due |
| Move | Decide by | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment and vehicles | Dec 31 | Placed in service this year: Section 179 or bonus depreciation |
| Owner salary (S corp) | Last payroll of the year | Reasonable salary paid before distributions |
| Timing of income and expenses | Dec 31 | Which year an invoice or bill lands in |
| Corporate estimated tax | Dec 15 | Fourth installment for a calendar-year C corp |
| Owner estimated tax | Jan 15 | Fourth installment for individuals |
| State pass-through entity tax | Varies by state | Where allowed, state tax paid by the entity |
| S corp election for next year | Mar 15 | Takes effect for the year it is filed in |
Which moves apply depends on your entity, state and profit. A due date on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day.

Ask a CPA directlyWhen should a business start tax planning?
By the third quarter. Most of what sets your tax bill is decided before December 31: entity choice, owner salary, equipment purchases and the timing of income and expenses. We build a projection from your books in September or October, so there is still time to act on it. In January, all that is left is reporting what happened.
Do you prepare both the business return and the owner's personal return?
Yes. We prepare your business return and the owners' personal returns together, so K-1 income, owner salary, estimated payments and state credits line up on both. One team works from one set of books, and nothing gets lost between two preparers.
Should my LLC elect to be taxed as an S corporation?
It depends on your profit, the salary you would need to pay yourself and your state. An S corporation can lower self-employment tax once profit is well above a reasonable salary, but it adds payroll, a separate return and state costs. We run the numbers both ways first. For a calendar-year company, the election for the current year is due by March 15.
What is a reasonable salary for an S corporation owner?
It is the pay the IRS expects an owner who works in the business to take through payroll before taking distributions. It should match what you would pay someone else for the same work. We set it from your role, hours and market pay, write down how we got there and review it every year.
Does a tax extension give me more time to pay?
No. An extension gives you six more months to file the return, not to pay the tax. Tax still owed after the original due date is charged interest and a late payment penalty. That is why we estimate the balance before the deadline and pay it with the extension.
Do I need to file taxes in other states?
Possibly. Employees, property or sales above a state's threshold can create a filing requirement for income, franchise or sales tax in that state. Because we keep your books, we see sales by state every month and tell you before a threshold is crossed, so registration happens before penalties start.
What happens if I get an IRS or state tax notice?
Send it to us. We explain what it says in plain terms, check it against your return and books and draft the response. If you owe, we set up a payment plan or request penalty relief where it applies. We can represent you before the IRS and state tax agencies.
Do you work with businesses that only need tax?
Yes. We plan and prepare your returns from your books, whether your own team or another bookkeeper keeps them. A licensed CPA reviews the books first, and if they need cleanup before the return, we quote that separately at a fixed price.
How much do business tax planning services cost?
It depends on your entity type, the number of returns and states and whether we also keep your books. After a free 30-minute review you get a fixed-fee proposal with one fee, before any work starts. No hourly billing.
